《Ukonzakura Cherry Blossom in 2024》

Two symbolic trees are planted at Ueji-Hachimangu Shrine. One is a Citrus tachibana (uakon-no-tachibana) on the deity’s right side, The other is a cherry tree (sakon-no-sakura) planted on the left side. These are planted in the same way as Kyoto Imperial Palace. The cherry tree on the left side is a variety called "Ukonzakura" that has light yellow green flowers.
It’s also called "Bijinzakura" (beautiful cherry blossoms) because of its rare and beautiful color. Every year, many people visit the Ueji-Hachimangu Shrine to see the cherry blossom.The best time to see the cherry blossoms is middle of April.

Ueji-Hachimangu Shrine was under the patronage of the Tokugawa Shogunate because it was a shrine built by the Minamoto clan. About 300 years ago, when the shrine buildings got older, a chief priest went to Edo to ask for repair. At that time, He received two cherry tree and they’re the Ukonzakura. The cherry trees were planted in a different place for a while, but when the worship hall was built in 1947, they were moved in the present place.
The thickest trunk is dead because of long year, but branches have grown one after another, Now it’s bloom in a beautiful dome shape.

Ukonzakura can be enjoyed in three different shades depends on it’s blooming season.
The blooming season of Ukonzakura is about 10 days. Please come again, and enjoy the variation of colors.

・Start of blooming

The "start of blooming" color can be seen during the first few days of blooming before flowers are in full bloom. You can enjoy the most typical color of the Ukonzakura That is light yellow green.

・Middle of blooming

The " middle of blooming " color can be seen after the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The color remains light yellow green as the start of beginning, the dark pink tints blend together from the center of cherry blossoms. From a distance, the color seems to change from light yellow green to light yellow.

・End of blooming

The " end of Blooming " color can be seen after the full bloom of the cherry blossoms are past. When the leaves turn green, the pink pigment from the center of the flower spread to the entire flowers. The yellow green color disappears from the flowers, and the whole flower turns pink. You could enjoy the harmony of the light pink flowers and green leaves.

During the festival season, the cherry blossoms will be lit up from sunset to 8:00 p.m.

Matcha (Japanese green tea) is also tasteful during the time of illumination. Matcha is available until 8:00 p.m.
